If we consider the average percentages of scraps generated by current processes applied in the industry of the membranes, it is estimated that in Europe we produce 61.540 tons of scraps corresponding to 10.300.00 sq. m., of which 10,000 tons, equivalent to 1.7 million sq. m., of membranes produced in Italy. Such quantity of bitumen-polymer membranes sent annually to landfill refer only to scraps from industrial processes. Are therefore excluded both the scraps produced by the activities of installation in the building and the scraps produced by the substitution at the end of the product life cycle. The data therefore are widely underestimated when considering the total volume of scraps produced annually, which is difficult to calculate.
Also with regard to the glass fiber, following the same logical process defined for the estimates of membranes scraps, the quantities of insulation made from glass fibers produced in total in the various EU countries are annually about 77 million cubic meters (data IAL Consultant), approximately 1.54 million tons, of which 850,000 m³ (23,000 tons) produced in Italy. The scraps of these products to landfills in Europe amounted to a total of 4,600,000 m³ (100,000 tons), of which 80,000 m³ (2,000 tons) in Italy. For this type of scraps is not available distributions between the various countries of Europe in the quantities listed above. As for scraps of based bitumen-polymer membranes, the data for the scraps generated during the demolition and replacement are difficult to estimate.
These materials are classified as non-hazardous scraps the disposal of which can only occur through the transfer at authorized sites.
